To allow you to save changes after you alter table, Please follow these steps for your sql setting:
- Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008
- Click Tools menu options, then click Options
- Select Designers
- Uncheck "prevent saving changes that require table re-creation" option
- Click OK
- Try to alter your table
- Your changes will performed as desired
